· Prepare yourself – the website at www.job-interview.net provides some useful advice on responses to standard interview questions.

· Take your CV and any covering letter you sent to the company, they may want to refer to it at interview. Take copies of any references and  qualifications with you for them to look at.

· If it is appropriate take a portfolio of your work to demonstrate your abilities.

· Be polite and courteous to everyone you meet  – you never know what their position is and what influence they may have on the decision process.

· Be yourself! – try to relax and use the process as a learning experience

So, you wrote the perfect CV and secured yourself an interview – so what now?

I got the interview .. But how do I secure the job

Thinking about things …………………..

· Do your homework, find out as much as you can about the organisation – logging onto their website is always a good place to start.

· Whether we like it or not, first impressions do count, wear something comfortable, but make sure it is in keeping with the company’s policies. It’s always better to go smarter than required than to appear scruffy.

· Prepare interview question responses and questions of your own to ask, it will make you feel more confident and you will appear prepared and organised.

Top Interview Tips

· It sounds obvious, but practice your techniques at home. Ask a friend or family member to rehearse a “mock interview” with you.

· Be confident at the interview (but not cocky), shy and retiring just won’t make your strengths shine!

· Remember the interview process is your chance to find out more about the job as well as the organisation’s opportunity to find out about you.

· Be prepared to talk about yourself, your achievements to date and your aspirations for the future.

The interview  ……………………………..

At the end of the interview thank the interviewer for taking the time to see you and part with a firm handshake. If you liked the job – say so, you will not lose points for being honest!

Ask when you are likely to hear about the job and the process for this.

If you secured your interview through StepChange it would be normal for the employer to contact us.

But if you applied yourself the employer may want to write to you or give you a call – now you wouldn’t want to miss that call!
